Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 remains atop the weekend box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Traditionally, whenever there’s a weekend where no major studio film opens up, the films from the previous weekend remain in the same order.  Since nothing premiered this weekend, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 1 retained the #1 spot for the third weekend in a row.  THE MUPPETS came in a strong second place, followed by HUGO and ARTHUR CHRISTMAS.  All in all, it was a pretty boring weekend at the movies, but hopefully that gave you time to get some rest after the holiday weekend and to prepare for the onslaught of Oscar hopefuls we’re going to get in the next few weeks.

Next week, we have THE SITTER, NEW YEAR’S EVE, TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY and YOUNG ADULT.  As much as it pains me to say, I’m guessing NEW YEAR’S EVE will take the box office, only because we haven’t had a romantic comedy come out in a while.  But THE SITTER might make a surprise run at it. Chances are good that TTSS and YOUNG ADULT won’t make much noise at an overly crowded box office.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
