Robert Pattinson's Water For Elephants can't knock Rio from atop the box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

As predicted, RIO made it two weekends in a row with another strong box office performance.  Granted, it didn’t have a whole lot of competition considering both MADEA’S BIG HAPPY FAMILY and WATER FOR ELEPHANTS weren’t exactly mainstream films.  But they both managed to outperform studio estimates with Madea proving once again she’s a force to be reckoned with at the box office.  Meanwhile, Robert Pattinson’s attempt to rid himself of the Twilight stigma was also a success as Elephants was able to come in a strong third.  Elephants is a good, if not great, film.

Overall, the weekend numbers were up drastically, thanks to the heavy rain most people felt across the country.  There’s nothing better than watching a movie when it’s raining outside.  Next week sees the release of FAST FIVE, which is completely unnecessary, but actually looks like it could be a fun film.  My guess is that Five and Rio will finish 1-2 next weekend.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon in Water For Elephants

1. Rio $26.5m

2. Madea’s Big Happy Family $26m

3. Water For Elephants $17.5m

4. Hop $12m

5. Scream 4 $7m

6. African Cats $6m

7. Soul Surfer $5.5m

8. Insidious $5m

9. Hanna $5m

10. Source Code $4.8m
