Ron Howard passes on directing the third film in Dan Brown's trilogy The Lost Symbol

Dan Brown’s best selling novels THE DA VINCI CODE nor ANGELS & DEMONS have ever really interested me. No matter how hard people tried to convince me to check out his work, I just couldn’t jump on the bandwagon. Even when the films for both novels came out, I was not interested. Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors, but it just didn’t appeal to me.

There’s one more novel of Brown’s that needs to be adapted into a screenplay, “The Lost Symobol” and while Ron Howard has directed the two previous installments, he won’t be helming this one. Howard said that he would stay on as a producer, but could not do the same story over and over with the same characters.

Howard was interested in directing the Somali pirate film adapted from Captain Richard Phillips first hand account, “A Captain’s Duty”. Hanks will be starring in that one as well, but Howard isn’t wanted on that one because of claims that he isn’t “hot and cool” like director Paul Greengrass. This is the second bout of disappointment for Howard who recently got told by Universal that they were dropping THE DARK TOWER project. Don’t worry though, he’s still doing UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN and SPY VS. SPY.
