Ryan Gosling, Zac Efron and Leonardo DiCaprio supposedly met with J.J. Abrams about Star Wars: Episode VII
I’m not even sure where to begin with this latest Star Wars rumor. With a summer 2015 release date staring at Disney like the barrel of a shotgun, they have to be feeling a little pressure. The issue, of course, is that online outlets have numerous “inside” resources and all it takes is a whisper and it will instantly become news. That’s the internet and that’s the world we live in. So don’t be shocked that the good folks over at LatinoReview are bringing word that Leonardo DiCaprio met with the Disney executives about a possible Star Wars role, only to get “ruled out”. I assume that Leonardo DiCaprio is asked to look at everything, so that makes sense. Also, he’s a vocal fan of Star Wars and there were rumblings in the pre-prequel days that George Lucas was eying him for Anakin Skywalker.
The slightly more juicier rumor is that Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron are also being eyed for roles, presumably that of a descendant of Luke Skywalker (again, I feel the need to point out this is just a rumor, coming from one source). I don’t buy Gosling even taking the meeting since he’s been vocal about wanting to tone down his exposure and starring in a Star Wars movie is the worst way to do that. Zac Efron makes sense, however, because he seems like he’s trying to reach that superstar status and there’s no better way than to really nail a role in a Star Wars movie.
If these rumors are true (and that’s a BIG if), then I like where J.J. Abrams’ head is at. Casting unknowns in key roles in the prequels didn’t work so well and I think that a somewhat established star needs to lead the sequels. Seeing Ryan Gosling in a Han Solo-type role (my thoughts, not the source’s) makes me smile, as does seeing Zac Efron as a Jedi. I have to assume that an official casting announcement of some sort is coming in the near future, so stay tuned.
