Sam Raimi considering directing Robert Downey Jr. in Oz, The Great and Powerful

When it was suggested a while back that Robert Downey Jr. was in talks to play the Wizard in the simmering prequel to THE WIZARD OF OZ, titled OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, a lot of people got really excited. It seems like a project made for Downey. But the question has been looming ever since of who would take the directing reigns, with names like Sam Mendes, Adam Shankman and Guillermo del Toro surfacing as possibilities. But now it looks like Sam Raimi might be the man for the job with rumors swirling that he has been offered the gig.

To be frank, I don’t know much about the prequel, only that it revolves around how the Wizard became the Wizard. But it has that Oscar-y, musical, fun feel to it, leading me to believe it could get some serious critical acclaim if done properly. Combine that with RDJ at the top of his game and you have a sure-fire hit. I’m just not sure Raimi is the man for the job. I think any of the other directors rumored would be better, most notably Guillermo del Toro, who has some time on his hands after dropping out of THE HOBBIT.
