Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton will play vampires in Byzantium

I’ve professed my adoration for Saoirse Ronan on several occasions, but one of the things I like most about her is her choice in scripts. Whether it be THE LOVELY BONES or HANNA, she always seems to be attached to very interesting projects. So it’s with much confusion that I bring you news that Ronan will be working with director Neil Jordan in the vampire film BYZANTIUM. In a confusing twist, Gemma Arterton will be playing Ronan’s mother and the two will be a mother-daughter vampire duo that sometimes pose as sisters. It sounds like the film will be very dark, but the vampire schtick is getting old. Filming is scheduled to start in October.
Neil Jordan is one of the more creative directors out there and he was most recently responsible for the underrated ONDINE. But even with that, I’m disappointed he’d go back to the vampire genre (he directed INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE). I’m just so tired of all the different vampire tales out there.
