Scarlett Johansson is set for Ghost in the Shell
A while back, it was reported that Scarlett Johansson was offered the lead role in the live-action GHOST IN THE SHELL movie. It was unclear at the time what her level of interest was, but today we get word that she has officially signed on to the role, setting the talented actress up for another potential franchise. We don’t know how closely the live-action movie will follow the various anime films, but we do know that the script was written by William Wheeler and that Rupert Sanders will be directing. Sanders, of course, directed SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, so he at least has a little familiarity with strong female characters. Wheeler is a little more of a wildcard since he previously wrote THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST and THE HOAX, neither of which reminds me of GHOST IN THE SHELL.
As for Johansson, this will bring into question her involvement in future Marvel films. I would imagine the studio wants GHOST IN THE SHELL to be a long running franchise, so it could be difficult for her to juggle to major franchises like that. I’m guessing this will also spark rumors that Black Widow might not make it out of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON alive. (Variety)
