Sean Penn in talks to play Max Perkins in Genius

Sean Penn probably makes me more upset than any other actor in Hollywood. I can’t stand the guy and I think he’s just a despicable, unlikable human being with few redeeming qualities. Whether it’s his visit to Iraq before the war or his lying about his involvement in the relief efforts in Haiti, the guy is just obnoxious. But what makes me so upset is that no matter how much I dislike him personally, he’s one of the finest actors of our generation and even though he hasn’t always done great movies, he’s always delivered great performances. Therefore, despite his real-life persona, I look forward to all of his movies.
Next up for the actor is looking like it’s going to be GENIUS, which is based off the literary editor Max Perkins. Perkins is responsible for finding and harnessing such talent as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Wolfe. Bill Pohlad will be producing and directing the film. The film is based off the biography by A. Scott Berg titled “Max Perkins: An Editor of Genius”. It definitely sounds like a role Sean Penn could sink his teeth into. The official synopsis is below:
Filled with colorful anecdotes about everything from Perkins’s struggles to convince the old guard at Scribners to publish his visionary (and often controversial) authors to his falling out with one of his most brilliant discoveries, Thomas Wolfe, MAX PERKINS reveals with insight and humor the professional and personal life of one of the most legendary figures in the history of American publishing. Given unprecedented access to the correspondence between Perkins and his writers, Berg has fashioned a compellingly thorough biography that is as entertaining as it is informative.
