Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia disappoint as Shrek 4 takes the box office

I have to say that I’m a little shocked at the box office numbers this weekend. I predicted last week that PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME would finish behind SEX AND THE CITY 2, so that was a no-brainer. But what I didn’t see was such low numbers from both films. Only $32 million (this doesn’t include the $14 million it took in on Thursday) for SATC 2 seems a little disappointing for such a big movie. As for PRINCE OF PERSIA, $30.2 isn’t great for a Bruckheimer film. As much as I liked the film, I just don’t think Gyllenhaal is capable of opening his own film. As for SHREK FOREVER AFTER, you have to give it some respect for beating out two high profile films in its second week.
Next week is a slow one, with neither THE KILLERS or GET HIM TO THE GREEK looking like box-office champions. So SHREK 4 should have another good chance of taking the top spot for the third week in a row. But it will be interesting to see if SATC 2 or PRINCE OF PERSIA have any staying power.
1. Shrek Forever After $43.3 million
2. Sex and the City 2 $32.1 million
3. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time $30.2 million
4. Iron Man 2 $16 million
5. Robin Hood $10.3 million
6. Letters to Juliet $5.9 million
7. Just Wright $2.2 million
8. Date Night $1.7 million
9. MacGruber $1.5 million
10. How to Train Your Dragon $1 million
