Sex Tape Blu-ray Review

There are a lot of ways to spice up your love life. Flowers. Candy. Homemade Porn. With two kids, jobs and life itself wearing them down, Annie (Diaz), who writes a parenthood blog which may soon be syndicated and Jake (Segel), a musical pr often find themselves having to schedule their alone time a week or more in advance. One night, the stars are aligned properly and they find themselves totally alone. On a whim, they decide to film themselves doing the nasty. For three hours. Satisfied with their efforts they decide to erase their handiwork. But push the wrong button and…oops! Off into the mysterious “cloud” it goes!

Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel in Sex Tape

Sometimes coarse, sometimes hilarious, SEX TAPE works primarily thanks to the chemistry between Diaz and Segel. The two actors, and director Kasdan, had teamed up a couple of years ago for BAD TEACHER and the experience was so much fun they decided to get the band back together and make another film. Here the jokes fly fast and furious, with some hitting a bull’s-eye and others falling flat. The two leads are helped out by a strong supporting cast which includes Rob Corddry and Ellie Kemper as friends of the couple, Nat Faxon as a co-worker of Segel’s and Rob Lowe as the media mogul that wants to buy and promote Annie’s blog. All have fun moments, with Lowe stealing his scenes as a straight-faced narcissist who commissions and collects paintings that immortalize his likeness in famous Disney animation settings. Whether he’s flying high above London as PETER PAN or proudly displaying the lion cub Simba in a classic scene from THE LION KING, the character is always smiling and perpetually happy. Lowe has so much fun with the role that you almost wish he had more screen time. Jack Black also has a quick cameo which finds he and Segel trading various porn-site names, some real, all of them hilarious.

Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel in Sex Tape

The film’s comedy is derived from the frantic efforts that Jake and Annie go through to stop their friends, and strangers, from viewing their accidentally uploaded adventures. Having to endure stares and answer embarrassing questions, the two go about their task good naturedly, displaying an almost underlying pride that their efforts have been so well received. Jokes about the various positions used, the 1970’s book “The Joy of Sex” and what, exactly, is “the cloud” are the mainstays here and most of them hit their mark solidly. The subject matter is pretty adult – a lot of nudity for a film starring two “A” listers, but it’s really there for laughs, not for shock. Diaz and Segel are a fun pair and it’s obvious the two share a relative comfort with each other. Kasdan keeps the pace moving, allowing the jokes that hit to resonate while leaving the ones that don’t quickly behind. The creative trio work well together, which makes the just announced BAD TEACHER 2 something to look forward to! This group has shown that they are worth investing two-hours in. And it doesn’t matter if they are clothed or not!

Video: Presented in its original 1:85.1 aspect ratio, the picture is bright and clear. Colors are sharp and not washed out. Even Segel’s bare behind stands out!

Bloopers (5:17): A short collection of blown lines, many of them dealing with Jason Segel and his penis’ nickname.

Deleted and Extended Scenes (6:27): A couple new and one extended scene that add a couple of jokes, nothing missed.

Line-O-Rama (4:56): A collection of some of the funnier dialogue from the film.

Capturing the Moment (5:47): Director Jake Kasdan and stars Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel discuss their enjoyment in working together and talk about the film’s adult content and sex scenes.

Romance Reboot with Dr. Jenn Berman (9:56): VH1 reality show host Berman tries to analyze the on-screen relationship. What this has to do with the film I have no idea.

Meet Hank Rosenbaum (2:27): Rob Lowe appears in his on-screen persona and gives viewers a look at some of his paintings. Funny stuff. This guy needs his own movie.
