Shailene Woodley in talks to join Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in The Amazing Spider-Man 2
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN may not have been the uber-hit that Sony wanted, but at the end of the day it’s still a Spider-Man movie and the world loves Spidey. So with a sequel on the way and director Marc Webb and star Andrew Garfield officially on board, now we can start having fun with casting rumors. First up is who will play Mary Jane Watson, who is essential to the comic lore and was played by Kirsten Dunst in the first trilogy. It looks like THE DESCENDANTS star Shailene Woodley is the frontrunner and early rumors say she’s already in talks to take the coveted role. For those of you that read the comic books, you know that MJ steps in to help Peter Parker grieve the death of Gwen Stacy. And Gwen Stacy herself (Emma Stone) has already said she wants to hold true to the comics and have her character killed off. I’d still be surprised if Sony goes down this route, but it would at least be something new to the series.
There’s also the question of the villain, who we assume will be Electro based off the end credits sequence, which has yet to be cast. No word yet on who is in the running or if Electro will officially be the villain, but I’d suspect those rumors aren’t far behind. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 opens up on May 2nd 2014. (Variety)
