Shailene Woodley joins Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Oliver Stone’s Edward Snowden film
Although she’s now best known for her work in the DIVERGENT series, people sometimes forget that before that, Shailene Woodley had already proven herself a legitimate actress alongside George Clooney in THE DESCENDANTS. She also carried this summer’s THE FAULT IN OUR STARS and starred in the indie drama WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD, so let’s just say she’s a talented actress with a nice resume. So she should be a welcomed addition to Oliver Stone’s Edward Snowden biopic, where she will play Snowden’s girlfriend a the time when he first went on the run after he leaked some NSA secrets.
Woodley is a great choice for the film, as she should be able to add some sympathy to the film. But this one all comes down to how Oliver Stone is going to tell the story. Stone has a tendency to be heavy handed with his bias and if he paints Snowden out to be a hero, this could come out the wrong way. The good news is that he’s basing the film off of two true accounts of Snowden, including Luke Harding’s “The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man” and Anatoly Kucherena’s “Time of the Octopus”. Principal photography starts in January and I suspect the film will make a late Oscar run in 2015. (THR)
