Sharlto Copley is menacing in the first look at the villain in Elysium

Next year must be the year of the science-fiction film.  Between Tom Cruise in OBLIVION, Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS and Matt Damon’s ELYSIUM, people that haven’t been exposed to much sci-fi at the theater will get a chance to see what they’ve been missing.  And kudos to Hollywood for taking some chances on some original stories and putting A-list stars in the sci-fi films.  The aforementioned ELYSIUM is the only one we haven’t seen a trailer for yet, but today we get the first look at the film’s villain, played by Sharlto Copley. While talking about his character, Sharlto Copely said “What I did with him — which I try to do with all my original characters — was draw from real life. I combined references from a very infamous South African military battalion called 32 Battalion, that fought in the Border Wars in South Africa, and a stereotype of character that you get in the south of Johannesburg, where the guys are a little bit more comfortable with violence!”

I’m anxious to see more from this film since director Neill Blomkamp’s DISTRICT 9 was such a great film that was also intelligent.  ELYSIUM is about a man (Matt Damon) in the distant future that has a chance to even out the drastic differences in the social classes.  It sounds like Blomkamp will once again weave current day politics and science-fiction.  ELYSIUM stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Alice Braga, Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, William Fichtner an Diego Luna.  The Neill Blomkamp directed film opens in theaters on August 9th, 2013.
