Shutter Island holds off Cop Out for second week at #1

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Our review will post Monday, but I’ll give you a preview; COP OUT was terrible.  Even still, I’m surprised it didn’t manage a better showing, but given the lame previews and the fact the movie wasn’t very good, I guess $18.5 million isn’t bad for a Kevin Smith film.  I think Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio should be pleased with how well SHUTTER ISLAND is performing.  It will easily hit the $100 million+ mark over the next couple of weeks.  The other new release of the week was the horror film THE CRAZIES, which managed $16 million.  I’m guessing THE CRAZIES will easily beat COP OUT next week.  For those of you still on the AVATAR watch, it took the fourth spot with $14 million and brought it’s grand total to $706 million.

Next week sees the release of ALICE IN WONDERLAND and BROOKLYN’S FINEST, but of which look like great films.  Alice will almost definitely be #1 next week, but the marketing for BROOKLYN’S FINEST has been scarce, so I’m not sure how well that will do.
