Shutter Island scares off Valentine's Day at the box office

The often delayed SHUTTER ISLAND turned out to be a hit after all. The Leonardo DiCaprio thriller raked in over $40 million at the box office, giving it a very impressive opening day weekend and more than good enough to beat out last week’s #1, VALENTINE’S DAY. In what should come as no surprise, AVATAR managed to regain the third spot with yet another $16 million, taking its grand total to $687,821,000. Yep, that’s right; another $13 million and it will pass the $700 million mark. Is it too far off to think it might make a billion dollars?
Next week sees the release of Kevin Smith’s COP OUT with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. The film looks funny, but K-Smith has a long history of disappointing box office numbers. And I’m not sure Bruce Willis is going to be able to reverse that trend.
1 Shutter Island $40,200,000
2 Valentine’s Day $17,160,000
3 Avatar $16,100,000
4 Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief $15,300,000
5 The Wolfman $9,846,000
6 Dear John $7,300,000
7 Tooth Fairy $4,500,000
8 Crazy Heart $3,025,000
9 From Paris with Love $2,500,000
10 Edge of Darkness $2,210,000
