Sony moving forward with Dragon Tattoo sequels, Rooney Mara set to return
I don’t think that David Fincher’s English language remake of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO was quite the success that Sony was hoping for, but the film has still managed to make over $75 million since its late December release and it’s doing pretty well overseas considering the hard “R” rating and subject matter. And given the untimely release (who wants to see a brutal rape scene right before Christmas?) and difficult themes, I would say Sony should be pleased with what it has done so far. Apparently the execs at Sony agree with me and they’ve basically given the greenlight to move forward with the sequels, THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE and THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET’S NEST.
Steve Zaillian has already written the script for Fire and is currently working on Nest, so the scripts should be ready to go by the time filming starts, which they want to happen this fall. There are still some questions though, most notably who is going to direct the sequels since David Fincher has not signed on and was dodgy when asked about his involvement while doing press for Dragon Tattoo. Although it is believed Daniel Craig will return, he hasn’t signed on either. In fact, the only one we know will be returning is Rooney Mara, who is locked for all three films. Expect to hear more about these sequels in the coming months, especially if Dragon Tattoo does well on DVD and Blu-ray.
