Star Wars: Episode VII eyes Michael Fassbender and Adam Driver, will focus on Luke, Han and Leia
Casting rumors abound for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. Yesterday we reported that ‘Breaking Bad’ star Jesse Plemons was being eyed for a role and now we bring word that Michael Fassbender, Adam Driver and Hugo Weaving are also in the mix for roles in the upcoming sequel. Supposedly, Fassbender met with J.J. Abrams back in December and Weaving is being targeted for a role of an Imperial commander. No word on what role Driver would play. I think every director wants Fassbender for everything, so that’s not a surprise and Weaving is the ultimate bad guy, so no shocker there either. And until we learn what roles the others are in the mix for, it’s hard to judge the casting just yet.
But maybe the bigger news of the day is that since J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan took over script writing duties from Michael Arndt, they’ve shaken the script up a bit. If you recall, early word had it that in Arndt’s version, Luke, Han and Leia were going to be supporting characters while their offspring took center stage. Well, Abrams and Kasdan have a different idea and now it looks like Luke, Han and Leia are going to be the main stars while their offspring will be more supporting players in Episode VII and then have bigger roles in VIII and IX. This is also being cited as the reason for the writers switch, which differs from the original thought that it had more to do with the tight deadline. (THR)
Of course, as always, nothing is official until you hear it from someone at Disney or LucasFilm, but this is the most reliable “rumor” we’ve heard to date. And for the record, no one has signed on for the film yet, including Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill. But if there’s a switch in the focus, then that might be why they haven’t signed yet; none of them would sign until they know what’s being asked of them. Lead actors make more than supporting actors. As for the shift in focus, I’m good with it as I think we need some real closure to the big trio. But they’ll have to set up a new group of Jedis to take over at some point.
