Star Wars: Episode VII pushed back to December 2015

Star Wars Christmas 2

Well, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.  Hot off the heels of news that J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan had taken over writing duties from Michael Arndt, we now have confirmation that STAR WARS: EPISODE VII has an official release date of December 18th, 2015.  Originally, it was slated to hit a May 2015 time slot, but either Disney wanted to space out their franchises (AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON also opens summer of 2015) or the short time frame was too much for Abrams and company to cope with.  This will be the first Star Wars film to open in December, unless you count the Star Wars Holiday TV Special…  Below is the official press release:

With pre-production in full-swing, a confirmed release date of December 18, 2015, has been set for Lucasfilm’s highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII.“We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture,” said Alan Horn, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios.

Star Wars: Episode VII will be directed by J. J. Abrams (Super 8, Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek)and is being scripted by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi). Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, with Tommy Harper (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Jack Ryan, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds) serving as executive producers. John Williams is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII.

In related news, Brad Bird’s TOMORROWLAND also got pushed back, taking what was presumably the slot occupied by Star Wars.  The George Clooney starring film was slated for December 12th, 2014 and will now hit theaters on May 22nd, 2015.
