Star Wars Episode VII rumor update; Ewan McGregor wants more and Emperor Palpatine is a ghost

Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan Kenobi 2

It has been a while since we’ve gotten some juicy Star Wars nuggets. I was hoping to have a great write-up covering all the latest Star Wars updates after Disney’s D23 Expo, but they decided it wasn’t the right time to reveal any Star Wars nuggets and surprisingly, the internet broke out into rumor overdrive in the subsequent days, culminating in two big rumors regarding possible returns of famous characters:

First, it looks like Ewan McGregor wants his own standalone Obi Wan Kenobi movie. McGregor has always said he’d be up for more Star Wars, but word from LatinoReview is that he wants his own movie. Disney has already said they’re going to make some standalone films focusing on various Star Wars movies and if they’re going to go with an actor/character from the prequel, Ewan McGregor’s Obi Wan is really their only option. Despite the films’ faults, I thought McGregor was one of the few bright spots in the prequels. There’s a little more to this rumor as it’s also being suggested that McGregor will make an appearance in EPISODE VII as well. To what capacity is anyone’s guess, but this could be something as big as a Force spirit or as small as a historical hologram. As always, no one is saying anything official.

The next rumor revolves around Ian McDiarmid returning as Emperor Palpatine. The original source says they have no idea how he’ll return, but once again, LatinoReview claims that Palpatine will return in Force spirit form. As you may recall, it was alluded to in RETURN OF THE SITH that this ability is something the Sith can do as well. Personally, I don’t like the idea, but again, we have no idea to what extent he’ll be involved. If it’s a quick snippet and a nod to the original trilogy, then I doubt it will make a difference. But if he’s hugely involved and becomes a major plot point, I’ll be disappointed. But it’s way too early to react since nothing has been confirmed. (Jedi News)
