Casting news for THE HOBBIT was coming in at light speed there for a while, but it seems to have slowed down considerably since most of the major roles have been cast. But one role that was still vacant was the Master of Laketown, which will be played by veteran actor Stephen Fry. This is the second tentpole film for Fry, after signing on the SHERLOCK HOLMES 2 as Holmes’s brother, Mycroft. Director Peter Jackson released this statement about Fry’s addition: “I’ve known Stephen for several years, and we’re developing a ‘Dambusters’ movie together. In addition to his writing skills, he’s a terrific actor and will create a very memorable Master for us.”
He joins a cast that includes Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen and Cate Blanchett. The first of the two Hobbit films hits theaters in 2012, with the second arriving in 2013.
