Steve Carell to star in Foxcatcher for director Bennett Miller

Steve Carell has gotten his feet wet with dramatic fare, including DAN IN REAL LIFE and even this summer’s CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE, but the comedian really hasn’t taken the dive into full on drama…until now. The comedian is set to star in Bennett Miller’s (riding high off his MONEYBALL success) FOXCATCHER. The film is going to be based off the true story of John du Pont. For those that don’t know, John du Pont was a multimillionaire zoologist, Harvard graduate and sports enthusiast that built an Olympic training facility for wrestlers. He made national headlines in 1996 when he murdered free style wrestler David Schultz. In the murder trial, it was revealed that du Pont suffered from serious mental illnesses and claimed that he killed Schultz because he thought he was part of an international conspiracy to murder him.
Although Carell wouldn’t be the first choice that would pop to most people’s minds, I think he’s a perfect fit. This is Carell’s chance to shine as an actor and add depth to what sounds like a very interesting person. Miller is also a good choice for director as he has experience tackling real life stories with both CAPOTE and MONEYBALL. Production on the film will start next spring.
