A Jerry Garcia biopic is coming to the big screen

Even though I consider myself pretty well-versed with most music, I have to sheepishly admit I don’t know anything about Jerry Garcia or any of the music of The Grateful Dead. I heard a couple of songs in a TV show one time (‘Freaks and Geeks’) and I liked what I heard, but I just never took the time to pick up some of their albums and give them a shot. But the most fascinating thing about The Grateful Dead was their insanely loyal fanbase that followed them around the country. So with that kind of following, it’s only natural Hollywood would make a movie about it. Director Amir Bar-Lev will be handling directing duties on the biopic.

It’s not clear at this point if the film is going to be an actual movie or if it will instead be a documentary. Bar-Lev is actually a documentary filmmaker and the film is based on the Robert Greenfield book ‘Dark Star’, which is a written account of the late singer by his family and friends. I feel like there have been several Grateful Dead documentaries already, so I’d like to see an actual biopic of the group and Jerry Garcia. Of course, who would play the iconic musician?
