Weekend box office: Cars 3 cruises past Wonder Woman

This was an interesting time at the weekend box office.  We had one movie that performed right around expectations (CARS 3), one that overperformed (ALL EYEZ ON ME) and one that underperformed (ROUGH NIGHT).  Let’s start with CARS 3, which managed to take the number one spot and beat out WONDER WOMAN.  The film made about $10 million less than CARS 2, but given how bad CARS 2 is and the general lack of excitement for a third film, $50 million isn’t a bad take.  It’s arguably the best film in the series and I’m guessing the actual Sunday numbers will push the film higher, along with good word of mouth.  The surprising film of the weekend was the Tupac biopic, ALL EYEZ ON ME.  The film has been trashed by critics and the people that were actually there, but it doesn’t matter because Tupac’s legacy is still very much alive and fans were clamoring for a movie.  The disappointment of the weekend was Scarlet Johansson’s ROUGH NIGHT, which couldn’t crack the top ten with less than $10 million and couldn’t even beat 47 METERS DOWN.  2017 has been a rough year for ScarJo.

Next week will probably be dominated by TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT.  I have no idea how this movie will perform at the box office.  I’ve never met anyone that liked the last few Transformers films, yet TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION opened with just over $100 million.  How is that possible?  I can’t imagine THE LAST KNIGHT opening that high, but there’s clearly an audience for the Transformers films, so I have to assume it will take the top spot from CARS 3.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Cars 3 $51.5m

2. Wonder Woman $37.5m

3. All Eyez On Me $33.5m

4. The Mummy $13.2m

5. 47 Meters Down $10.6mIt Comes at Night $6.2m

6. Rough Night $8.9m

7. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales $7.6m

8. Captain Underpants $7.3m

9. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 $4.8m
