The adorable Ellen Page is set to get serious on us for her next role as she’ll be taking the lead in the feature film adaptation of the short documentary FREEHELD. Page will be playing Stacie Andree, a New Jersey car mechanic who battles for the pension benefits of her police detective girlfriend, Laurel Hester after she’s diagnosed with a terminal illness. Ron Nyswaner will be writing new script. Nyswaner has experience with the subject matter as he also wrote the great PHILADELPHIA with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington.
The original short documentary generated a lot of buzz when it made the rounds in 2007/2008 and eventually went on to win the Oscar for Best Short Documentary in ’08. This should be a tear-jerker, but should also be a good move for Ellen Page, who is quickly turning into one of the best actresses around.
