Universal has picked up a new pitch for The Nutcracker

Universal has recently picked up a new adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”. Right now, “Waltz of the Flowers” is stuck in my head.

The Nutcracker ballet was inspired by this work of fiction. There have been movie adaptations mainly of the Tchaikovsky ballet piece but now someone has decided to stick with the story minus the tutus and dancing. The new take comes from John Mann and Jon Gunn with Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark (RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES) producing.

The live-action film will center on, “a 12-year-old girl who, with her brother and sister, receive gifts from their clockmaker-inventor godfather on Christmas Eve, one of which is a Nutcracker doll. That night, the girl begins an adventure that includes a war involving a seven-headed Mouse King and his army of mice, curses and themes of ugliness and beauty.”
