Emma Stone to play Mary Jane Watson in new Spider-Man film

Sounds like Sony Pictures Entertainment will offer the role of Mary Jane Watson to Emma Stone (most recently featured in EASY A and ZOMBIELAND) in the 3D “reboot” of SPIDER-MAN.  Although Stone is most likely to play Mary Jane, the hunt is still on for the actress who will play Gwen Stacy.  So far these four actresses have been mentioned for the part: Dianna Agron (from the television series GLEE), Georgina Haig (from WASTED ON THE YOUNG), Mia Wasikowska (ALICE IN WONDERLAND) and Dominique McElligott (MOON).  Stone and one of the four contenders will star alongside the new Spidey played by Andrew Garfield (THE SOCIAL NETWORK).  The new installment of SPIDER-MAN will be directed by Marc Webb.

If you remember correctly, in the previous SPIDER-MAN films, directed by Sam Raimi, Mary Jane Watson was played by Kirsten Dunst and Gwen Stacy was played by Bryce Dallas Howard.  I have a feeling Dunst will not be missed as she is not terribly loved by fanboys, but I would have liked to see Bryce Dallas Howard reprise her role as Gwen Stacy.  Too bad her time in Spidey’s world was too short lived.
