Weekend box office: 22 Jump Street takes the top spot

Weekend box office 22 Jump Street

Everyone knew that 22 JUMP STREET would do well at the weekend box office, but I’m not sure many of us predicted it would actually beat HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2.  It’s hard to be animated kids movies, especially sequels, so a ton of credit has to be given to the comedy sequel for actually living up to the promise of the original and then maybe even surpassing it.  22 JUMP STREET (click the link to read our review) almost doubled the original’s box office haul with over $60 million and although everyone has said there won’t be a third film, I can’t imagine any of the main players walking away from a franchise like this.  Besides, there’s a lot to make fun of when it comes to trilogies.  Meanwhile, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 surpassed the original, but probably not by as much as most people thought.  Last week’s #1 film, THE FAULT IN OUR STARS predictably dropped like a rock because like I said last week, not many people want to watch a depressing film more than once.

Next week sees the release of Clint Eastwood’s long gestating JERSEY BOYS, which looks fun, but I’m not sure Clint was the best choice to direct it.  We also get THINK LIKE A MAN TOO and given how well the first one performed, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one make some noise at the weekend box office.  However, with good reviews and great word of mouth, I can’t see 22 JUMP STREET losing hold of the top spot  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. 22 Jump Street $60m

2. How To Train Your Dragon $50.1m
