Smurf scribes Jay Scherick and David Ronn will pen Popeye

There’s still going to be a big screen animated POPEYE movie? That seemed like a flash in the pan. After all this time went by and no news, I just thought that they had decided to scrap it.

Well, now the project is back and has a set of screenwriters. Sony Pictures has hired on Jay Scherick and David Ronn, writers of THE SMURFS to pen the POPEYE film. THE SMURFS grossed $550 million so far worldwide so perhaps the studio is hoping to have the same success. POPEYE is a cherished cartoon character from the 1930s. The hope is that the younger audiences will embrace the spinach eating sailor. Do kids even know who POPEYE is these days? I remember that reruns of the old show would play on Cartoon Network. I don’t know if you can see it on any channels now.

The animated film will be in 3D of course. But 3D or no 3D, will POPEYE still be as appealing as it once was?
