Jeremy Renner is looking to play Julian Assange in Wikileaks film

Jeremy Renner

Jeremy Renner is having quite the life, post HURT LOCKER.  He’s had great supporting turns in films like THE TOWN, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL and of course, THE AVENGERS, but next weekend, we’ll be able to see if he can handle carrying a big budget action film on his own.  Personally, I’m not convinced he can, but maybe it’s because I’m so used to seeing him in the supporting roles.  I also think he’s an extremely talented actor and I’d like to see him do something that might challenge himself professionally, rather than just taking the big budget paychecks.  Word is that Jeremy Renner is looking to star in the upcoming film about Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, which would definitely be a juicy role for Jeremy Renner to sink his teeth into. TWILIGHT: BREAKING DAWN director Bill Condon is looking to direct the film.

Dreamworks has been eying this project for a while and bought the rights to two separate books; ‘Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange at the World’s Most Dangerous Website’ by Daniel Domscheit-Berg (who worked with Assange at Wikileaks) and ‘WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy’ by David Leigh and Luke Harding (journalists who worked with Assange).  The confusing aspect of doing a movie about Julian Assange and Wikileaks is that the story is still very much ongoing.  Heck, Wikileaks is close to getting funding again and Assange could get asylum in Ecuador, which could start up a whole new chapter in the saga.

But if they can get the script right and actually come up with an ending, then this would be a perfect role for Jeremy Renner.  Assange is a very complex character and it would be great to see Jeremy Renner hold an accent for an entire film.  I’m just skeptical they can make this into  movie worth seeing, at least as long as we can read a paper and get an update on the saga.
