Sandra Bullock and 12 Years A Slave win big from the Kansas City Film Critics Circle

12 Years A Slave

My very own Kansas City Film Critics Circle voted on our 47th Annual Loutzenhiser Movie Awards earlier today.  Taking top honors in six of the twelve categories including Best Film, Steve McQueen’s 12 YEARS A SLAVE was an overwhelming favorite.  GRAVITY and HER managed to take a couple awards a piece rounding out all the major categories.  With 30 members voting, it is possible to occasionally end up with a tie and we did that twice this year.  Best Director was split between Alfonso Cuaron for GRAVITY and Steve McQueen for 12 YEARS A SLAVE.  The other category was for Best Animated movie where FROZEN and DESPICABLE ME 2 shared the prize, while my personal choice for MONSTERS UNIVERSITY failed to garner enough votes.  Leonardo DiCaprio for THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, Jared Leto for DALLAS BUYERS CLUB and Scarlett Johansson for HER all picked up some strong support in their respective categories, ultimately losing to Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o for 12 YEARS A SLAVE.  Sandra Bullock won Best Actress for her magnificent work in the suspenseful space epic GRAVITY.
