Weekend box office: Life of the Party is no challenge for Avengers: Infinity War

The juggernaut that is AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR continues, becoming the second fastest film in history to hit the $500 million mark, right behind STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.  Moving the film up a week was a brilliant move on the part of Disney as they squeezed in an extra weekend to capitalize on the lack of competition.  The only somewhat serious contender at the weekend box office was the Melissa McCarthy headliner BACK TO SCHOOL LIFE OF THE PARTY.  This is part of McCarthy’s tour of all the traditional comedies and I have to assume there’s going to be some sort of body-swap or “possession” comedy coming for her at some point.  Once again, McCarthy is struggling to open a movie near $20 million on her own.  The lesser-known thriller BREAKING IN did surprisingly well with close to $15 million.

Next week sees the release of DEADPOOL 2, which should easily dethrone AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.  The original DEADPOOL opened with just over $130 million and DEADPOOL 2 should crush that number.  Infinity War will take a little of that audience, but there’s no reason to believe the film won’t easily surpass $150 million.  The release of DEADPOOL 2 should spell the end of records for AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR since I’m guessing DEADPOOL 2 has a much higher rewatchability factor than Infinity War.  While most studios are smart to avoid huge tentpole films, there are actually two other films opening next weekend including BOOK CLUB, starring Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda.  BOOK CLUB is clearly hoping to bring in a different audience than DEADPOOL 2.  There’s also SHOW DOGS, which is targeting the kiddo market, but just makes me really, really sad for Will Arnett. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Avengers: Infinity War $60m

2. Life of the Party $18m

3. Breaking In $14.5m

4. Overboard $8.8m

5. A Quiet Place $6m

6. I Feel Pretty $3.5m

7. Rampage $3.1m

8. Tully $2.4m

9. Black Panther $2.1m
