David Cronenberg can be an acquired taste. I have to admit that upon initial viewings, I typically don’t enjoy his films, but I find they grow on me each time I see them. But they’re a hard sell to American audiences as Cronenberg traditionally mixes dark political themes with an eroticism that can make people uncomfortable. MAPS TO THE STARS looks to be more of the same from the Canadian director. Unfortunately, it’s still unclear when American audiences are going to be able to see it and early word says that Focus might not release until 2015, killing any Oscar hopes it might have had. Check out the new trailer below to see if this is your cup of tea.
The official MAPS TO THE STARS synopsis: With this tale of a secret-filled Hollywood family on the verge of implosion, award-winning director David Cronenberg forges both a wicked social satire and a very human ghost story from our celebrity-obsessed culture. From a screenplay by acclaimed author, screenwriter and West Coast chronicler Bruce Wagner, and featuring an ensemble cast that includes Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack, Robert Pattinson, Olivia Williams and Sarah Gadon, MAPS TO THE STARS tours the seductive allure and the tender, darkly comic underbelly of contemporary success. There’s no domestic release date yet for the David Cronenberg directed film.
