Gael Garcia Bernal is set to play legendary boxer Roberto Duran in the biopic entitled HANDS OF STONE. For those non-sports fans, Roberto Duran is a boxer who beat Sugar Ray Leonard in an early welterweight championship bout (one before the 1989 middleweight fight in Las Vegas), the biopic will cover the earlier fight and the story leading up to it. There are rumors that Al Pacino may play the trainer Ray Arcel, but that is early speculation. HANDS OF STONE will be directed, produced and written by Jonathan Jakubowicz. No word on when this film will come out as it is not fully greenlit at this moment.
Gael Garcia Bernal is slowly making his way into the hearts of Americans and will most likely secure that position with the upcoming film CASA DE MI PADRE ( translated as HOUSE OF MY FATHER) where he will star alongside comedian Will Ferrell. That film is set to hit theaters sometime next year.
