The summer doldrums at the weekend box office usually kick in during the last weekend of August, but it seems things have gotten off to an early start this year with THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS barely crossing the $10 million mark. I’ve questioned Melissa McCarthy’s box office appeal for a while, but it’s hard to blame this film’s failure on her. It felt like no one involved really wanted to have anything to do with it and after the early screenings panned it, the film never had a chance. But word is that McCarthy got a nice payday for it, so good for her. Speaking of nice paydays, director Jon M. Chu should make bank for directing CRAZY RICH ASIANS 2 as the original just took it’s second weekend in a row and actually made more money on its second weekend than its first. That’s pretty impressive as the film barrels to $100 million. The only other new film was the dreadful looking A.X.L., which looks like it will crack the top ten with about $2 million.
Next week feels like everyone is giving up as the only new movies are films you probably haven’t heard of. First up is KIN, which feels like a YA adaptation gone wrong. Then there’s the drama OPERATION FINALE and the thriller THE LITTLE STRANGER. None of them will do much at the weekend box office and I suspect the top five will stay about the same, with CRAZY RICH ASIANS leading the way. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Crazy Rich Asians $25.5m
2. The Meg $11.6m
3. The Happytime Murders $10.2m
4. Mission: Impossible – Fallout $8.2m
5. Alpha $5.7m
6. Mile 22 $5.6m
7. Christopher Robin $5.5m
8. Blackkklansman $5m
9. Slender Man $2.5m
10. A.X.L. $2.4m
