The YA revolution continues at the weekend box office, with THE MAZE RUNNER the latest film to grab the top spot. The film opened with over $30 million, which isn’t bad for a late September release. It was smart to release it now because it would have gotten lost earlier in the summer. And since it only cost about $34 million to make, it almost earned its budget back in one weekend, so we can all start mentally preparing ourselves for the inevitable sequel. Liam Neeson’s latest venture into tough guy territory, A WALK AMONGST THE TOMBSTONES, opened moderately well with close to $15 million. American audiences just love an angry Liam Neeson. Finally, the ensemble comedy THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU (click the link to read our review) did okay with over $11 million. It’s not the kind of comedy that would pack theaters, but with Jason Bateman and Tina Fey leading it and a great supporting cast, I thought it would do better.
Next week sees Denzel Washington back in action in THE EQUALIZER. I never watched the show, but from the trailers, I’m guessing the movie doesn’t follow very closely to the way Edward Woodward portrayed the character. We also get the animated film, THE BOXTROLLS. THE BOXTROLLS doesn’t look like my cup of tea, but there are no animated movies at the box office right now and if DOLPHIN TALE 2 can haul in $8 million in its second week, I’m sure THE BOXTROLLS can clean up.
