Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart can rest easy; there won't be a Twilight reboot any time soon

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1

The Twilight universe was up in arms this weekend when a nasty rumor broke saying that Lionsgate was planning on remaking/rebooting the Twilight franchise on the fifth anniversary of the first film (that would be next year).  Well, Deadline caught up with Rob Friedman, who is a top executive at Lionsgate, and he categorically denied that there were any plans to reboot the franchise.  Specifically, he said “We are not remaking Twilight. We will happily support Stephanie Meyer if she decides to proceed in any way. But this will be the last one unless that should change.”

The idea of a remake/reboot so soon kind of makes me sick to my stomach, but a good argument for a remake/reboot is that the first Twilight film was so awful that recasting it and handing it to a decent director could do wonders for the series.  Of course, fans love Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart and I’m not sure they would follow a Twilight film without their involvement.  At the end of the day, the franchise is up to creator Stephanie Meyer, who has been all over the place in interviews as far as what she wants to do with the series.  She’s basically said she’s open to just about any direction, which really means she’ll support whatever will make her the most money.  My guess is that Lionsgate/Summit is not done with the Twilight saga, even though last entry in the series, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 2, hits theaters on November 16th.
