The premise of the film WIN WIN is that a runaway teenager joins a suburban New Jersey family and helps the local high school wrestling team. We’ve heard this story before in a movie called THE BLIND SIDE, so I’m a little frustrated that we get a copycat so soon. But WIN WIN stars Paul Giamatti and Amy Ryan and will be directed by Tom McCarthy (THE VISITOR).
McCarthy tends to go for the artsy, more mature films, so this seems like a departure for him. It also just seems like a boring film. I like Giamatti, but nothing about this film sounds right. On the McCarthy front, he’s achieved directing success, he’s nominated for a screenwriting Oscar for his work on UP and he’s also an actor, appearing in the last season of HBO’s ‘The Wire’. So the guy defines versatility.
