Weekend box office: Winchester battles Jumanji for the top spot

If you had told me a month ago we’d be talking about JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE dominating the weekend box office and that STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI would be out of the top ten, I’d say you were crazy.  But here we are, with Dwayne Johnson’s reboot taking the top spot at the box office yet again.  I feel like it has been a while since any actor could open their own movie to rousing box office success, but it’s clear The Rock’s reach and box office power is legit and has no end in sight.  The biggest challenger to Jumanji was the true story horror film WINCHESTER, which has a neat idea, but doesn’t seem to have been executed well enough to please hardcore horror fans.

Next week should mark the final end of Jumanji’s reign as the third film in the Fifty Shades trilogy is released, FIFTY SHADES FREED.  Yes, the movies are almost unwatchable, but they have a very loyal fanbase and so the third film should at least come close to the $46 million the second film opened with.  However, it should be noted that the second film had a drastic drop off from the second, so the third could easily suffer the same fate.  Regardless, it should easily take the top spot.  We also have Clint Eastwood’s THE 15:17 TO PARIS, which features the actual people depicting the events of the Paris train attack.  I applaud Eastwood for trying something creative, but I’m not convinced it’s going to work.  Finally, there’s PETER RABBIT, which might appeal to the younger crowd.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle $11m

2. Maze Runner: Death Cure $10m

3. Winchester $8.6m

4. The Greatest Showman $7.9m

5. Hostiles $5.5m

6. The Post $5.2m

7. 12 Strong $5.1m

8. Den of Thieves $4.7m

9. The Shape of Water $4.1m

10. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri $2.9m
