Ten Most Anticipated Summer Movies for 2014

Chef

7. CHEF – A rather simple story involving a man who begins to run a food truck while reconnecting with his estranged family may not sound like much. But the interesting supportive cast coupled with writer/director/actor Jon Favreau getting back in touch with his independent roots has me intrigued and longing for a sweet story in the midst of all the summer blockbuster.  This is my THE WAY, WAY BACK pick for this year. (May 9)

Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow trailer

6. EDGE OF TOMORROW –  I’m a sucker for a good science fiction film.  So even if EDGE OF TOMORROW is a letdown, I’m sure I’m going to be excited about some interesting visuals and high concept situations.  Despite one’s personal feelings about Tom Cruise, the man always delivers.  Cruise fighting aliens in a time loop alongside the beautiful and talented Emily Blunt, then add Bill Paxton to the mix – game over man.  (June 6)

Godzilla trailer

5. GODZILLA – This film might be the biggest gamble on the list, I’m surprised to see it here as well.  We know how the 1998 Matthew Broderick vehicle went down.  However, that film was directed by Roland Emmerich, while the new GODZILLA is directed by young filmmaker Gareth Edwards, whose 2010 independent movie MONSTERS was one of the year’s best.  With a solid cast led by Walter White himself Bryan Cranston, I’m rooting for a smashing good time. (May 16).

Guardians of the Galaxy

4. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY – Initially, I wasn’t the least bit interested in another superhero movie. Be that as it may, once I saw the trailer of a team of space renegades that includes a Racoon voiced by Bradley Cooper and a smart-alec goofy Han Solo type played by the always funny Chris Pratt, I was hooked. (August 1)
