The Ten Best Movies of 2013 – Nathan's List

3.  12 YEARS A SLAVE – There are two scenes that best exemplify why Steve McQueen’s look at slavery is unrelentingly powerful.  1. The whipping scene.  2. The hanging scene.  In both cases McQueen leaves the camera on the horror far longer than we expect, causing the audience to flinch first at the devastating truths from our brutal history.

Joaquin Phoenix in Her

2.  HER – Never has a love story felt so real.  Ironically, that is exactly what it is not.  A terrifying and honest exploration of society’s comfort behind a computer and our lack of comfort in front of one another. It’s a humorous and touching story with an amazing script from Spike Jonze and the best performances of the year by both Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson.

Gravity

1. GRAVITY –  Alfonso Cuaron’s masterful film is a deeply layered observation into the human spirit that simultaneously delivers a heart-pounding cinematic experience like you’ve never experienced before.  Movies don’t get much better than this and that is why this year’s number one is better than most anything I’ve seen this year or years past.  GRAVITY embodies why I love going to the movies, combining metaphoric story-telling through striking imagery while still being wildly entertaining.
