The Ten Best Movies of 2014
3. INTERSTELLAR – I had a lot of problems with Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR, but the truth is that the film was a one of kind experience that transcended me emotionally and has stuck with me for the long haul. To be honest, it wasn’t until the negative criticism began to come out that brought out my passion to defend it. Like that family member that you know is frustratingly flawed but you will punch the face of anyone else who says something bad about them, INTERSTELLAR feels personal. This was a daring film with grand themes that went where most have never gone before.
2. BIRDMAN or (THE UNEXPECTED VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE) – The technical achievement of BIRDMAN is a beautifully artistic expression like nothing I’ve ever seen. The appearance of one long take, the drumming music, the cleverly written story and dialogue, and the spectacular performances led by the always impressive Michael Keaton combined for a synergetic experience that I am thrilled is being recognized by many others. I was worried this impressive production would go unnoticed as it pulls in every element of filmmaking for something truly special.
1. BOYHOOD – Richard Linklater’s ambitious project of filming over thirteen years is overshadowing the fact that this film is an incredibly moving experience that accurately captures life through moments, no matter how insignificant they might feel at the time. The patience in directing and editing is masterful in how seamless it tells the story that should not be overlooked. The fact that it all worked out in addition to having the perfect final shot, means a little bit of luck didn’t hurt ether.
