Ten Best Performances from 2013 Not Nominated for an Academy Award
7. Emma Thompson in SAVING MR. BANKS – Thompson manages to be charming even when she plays a cold-hearted prude. Her likability extends beyond the realm of an otherwise unlikable character that is the perfect fit for this light-hearted feature.
6. Julia Louis-Dreyfus in ENOUGH SAID – I could have said the wonderful James Gandolfini who tragically passed away too soon earlier this year, but I really felt Louis-Dreyfus was the true star here. Proving she can transition from television to film, Louis-Dreyfus portrays a divorced mother trying to date in her older age with honest delight.
5. Julie Delpy & Ethan Hawke in BEFORE MIDNIGHT – These two are amazing together. Their portrayal of lovers Celine and Jesse for the past 18 years is one that should be studied by all aspiring actors. I know I sort of cheated here by naming two but the performances really hinge on one another and of course the incredible screenplay which they deliver in a natural almost improvisational style.
4. Sam Rockwell in THE WAY, WAY BACK – Rockwell consistently delivers impressive performance and is consistently forgotten. He owns the screen here, sizzling with commanding charisma, humor, and heart as an immature water park owner who’s always there to help out others in need.
