Ten Best Performances from 2013 Not Nominated for an Academy Award
3. Scarlett Johansson in HER – The Golden Globes disqualified her because she is never seen on screen. But Johansson brings life to an operating system simply with her voice. Writer/director Spike Jonze deserves a lot of the credit, but this is truly Johansson’s best performance and we don’t even see her beautiful face.
2. Tom Hanks in CAPTAIN PHILLIPS – This one is the most surprising because Hanks has been nominated in practically every single other award show this year. It’s crazy to me how Meryl Streep gets nominated for everything and Hanks vulnerable and brave portrayal as a captain kidnapped by Somali pirates gets passed over. The guy proves once again that he can do anything. The last ten minutes had me balling like a baby.
1. Joaquin Phoenix in HER – I can’t figure out why the best performance of the year has been absent from most award ballots this season. Phoenix is alone on screen for almost the entire picture revealing a gambit of emotions. Creating a touching and sincere love story for two, he truly is a one man show.
