Ten movies to look forward to before Christmas

3. LA LA LAND – In 2014, unknown writer/director Damien Chazelle surprised everyone with the phenomenal WHIPLASH. If you haven’t seen tension-filled film about a drummer and his teacher creating greatness by any means necessary, do it now.  Chazelle’s second film also dabbles in the music world combining jazz and love starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.  (December 2)

Birth of a Nation

2. THE BIRTH OF A NATION –  The Sundance Film Festival winner of the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award, THE BIRTH OF A NATION definitely has the most buzz behind it.  Anyone who has seen the early screenings have loved it and I’m curious to see if it’s as good as everyone says it is.  Nate Parker writes, directs and stars in a film about Nat Parker, a literate slave who orchestrates and uprising. (October 7)

Rogue One

1.  ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY – Any STAR WARS fan will probably be looking forward to every STAR WARS film that comes out in any year, as long as they continue with a high quality product. ROGUE ONE focuses on the small Rebellion team who steal the plans to the Death Star. You might remember a reference to this Ocean’s Eleven space crew in RETURN OF THE JEDI. “Many Bothans died to bring us this information.” Directed by Gareth Edwards (MONSTERS, GODZILLA), ROGUE ONE looks to be the most focused story within the STAR WARS universe. The Force is definitely strong with this one.(December 16)

Special Interest: MASCOTS – Anyone who is a fan of THIS IS SPINAL TAP, WAITING FOR GUFFMAN or BEST IN SHOW should be very excited.  Reprising his role as Corky, writer/director Christopher Guest returns with his next mocumentary comedy about the world of Mascots.  While I understand his material is very much for a niche audience, I for one could not be more thrilled.  You won’t see this one at the theater though as MASCOTS is a Netflix original. (October 13)

Other notable dates: SULLY (9/9), SNOWDEN (9/16), MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (9/23), DEEPWATER HORIZON (9/30), MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN (9/30), THE GIRL ON A TRAIN (10/7), THE ACCOUNTANT (10/14), JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK (10/21), NOCTURNAL ANIMALS (11/18), THE FOUNDER (12/16), PATRIOT’S DAY (12/21)
