The 5 best and worst movies of 2013, so far

Bad films on the other hand, come out all year round without any real gauge.  As usual there are plenty of stinkers to choose from.  Of course, I like to enlist the Siskel and Ebert way of thinking and don’t plan on punishing small films who are just trying to get a foot hold in this crazy business.  I’m usually a pretty positive guy and my reviews generally reflect that, however these films genuinely make me angry with their awfulness.

The 5 Worst Movies, so far

Weekend box office: After Earth

5.  AFTER EARTH – The newest film by M. Night Shyamalan is irritatingly normal.  Every aspect is average and bland.  The only reason the generic script got the greenlight is because superstar Will Smith wrote it.  Smith and his son Jaden star in this futuristic setting of earth where it is supposedly the most dangerous planet in the galaxy. The only problem is it just seems like a jungle with abnormal sized animals.  Throw in a CGI monster and some uninspired art direction and we have ourselves the worst film to date by everyone involved.  At least Shyamalan’s other films tried something new.

4.  A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD – This is just an insult to the DIE HARD franchise.  Can’t we just get rid of the title and name Bruce Willis’ character something other than John McClane? If that would have happened perhaps it wouldn’t have made the worst list.  Instead, it could have fallen into oblivion as another forgettable action film.  However, as it stands, possibly the greatest action film of all time in DIE HARD continues to get followed by punch lines.

Gangster Squad

3.  GANGSTER SQUAD – Ugh.  So disappointing.  Is it a parody comic movie or a serious drama?  The film is all over the map ending in a train wreck.  A gangster film starring Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Sean Penn and Emma Stone should have been so much better.  Then when you take into the account the biggest culprit to the film’s failure was by director Ruben Fleischer, the guy who helmed 2009’s wildly fun ZOMBIELAND, the mind is boggled beyond recognition.

2.  SCARY MOVIE 5 – The title says it all.  It’s hardly fair to criticize a franchise that is so well-known for being terrible that they don’t allow critics to even screen it.  The problem is they keep making money.  Shame on you public.  David Zucker is far removed from his AIRPLANE! days, not even writing parodies just using other movies to work in adolescent fart and sex jokes.  The films are insulting to comedy.

Movie 43

1.  MOVIE 43 – Why?  The biggest question is why would all these stars agree to such awfulness?  I remember seeing the trailers for this film and not even cracking a smile.  I guess I just don’t understand how Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Dennis Quaid, Greg Kinnear, Liev Schreiber, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, Richard Gere, Uma Thurman, Jason Sudeikis, Chloe Grace Moretz, Gerard Butler, Seann William Scott, Terrence Howard, Elizabeth Banks, Halle Berry and many others read funny in the script.  All these people took one giant leap backwards for actors everyone showing they may just be mindless puppets.  Clearly the script was terrible and they should have known better.
