The Dark Knight Rises midnight showings break box office records beating previous champ The Avengers

Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises

Not surprisingly, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (read our review by clicking the link) which is arguably the most anticipated film of 2012, broke box office records for their midnight showing and brought in $28 million last night and have brought in $68.4 million in advanced ticket sales. That blows THE AVENGERS out of the water, as it brought in $30 million in presales. I’m sure Warner Bros. is ecstatic with these numbers, especially since they estimate they could bring in a total of $185-$210 million for the entire weekend. However, the whole situation has a dark cloud looming over it as we learn more about THE DARK KNIGHT RISES shooting in Aurora, CO. It’ll be interesting to see if this tragedy will affect sales of the tickets over the coming weeks. I doubt those who have already purchased tickets will decide to forgo seeing the film, but it may make parents think twice before taking their kids to a film where real violence has already occurred.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is the third and final Batman film from director Christopher Nolan and stars: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. (Deadline)
