The Devil Inside dethrones Mission Impossible at the weekend box office

Simon Quarterman and Fernanda Andrade in THE DEVIL INSIDE

Traditionally, the only time a horror film surprises at the weekend box office is around Halloween.  And then, the experts just point to the fact that it’s Halloween and then it’s really no surprise at all.  So needless to say, most of us that follow the box office news are a little shocked to see THE DEVIL INSIDE be the first success of 2012 and hauling in over $30 million in its first weekend.  The film has a tired premise, zero star power and has been generally trashed by critics, so there’s really no explanation for its success.  I guess audiences just wanted to be scared at the theaters after sitting through the Oscar movie dump at the end of the year.  Other than Devil, there were no other new releases this weekend.

Next week sees a few new releases in the form of CONTRABAND, MAN ON A LEDGE and JOYFUL NOISE.  We also get the wide release of THE IRON LADY.  Chances are good that the Mark Wahlberg actioner CONTRABAND will take the top spot.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. The Devil Inside $34m

2. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol $19m

3. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows $13m

4. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo $10.8m

5. War Horse$8.5m

6.  Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked $9.5m

7. We Bought a Zoo $13m

8. The Adventures of Tintin $6.7m

9. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy $5.5m

10. New Year’s Eve $3.5m
