The Florida Film Critics Circle names Mad Max: Fury Road the best picture of the year
Of the five years I’ve been a part of the Florida Film Critics Circle, there has never been a more heated and testy debate about the Best Picture as there was this year. The movie that caused all the ruckus? CAROL (click the link to read my review and find out which side I was on). But perhaps the best/funniest part of the ordeal is that CAROL got completely wiped out of every category except for Production Design. Instead, the big winner was MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, taking Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects. Not a bad haul for a movie like Mad Max. The film is cleaning up across critics circle and was most recently named Best Picture by the Kansas City Film Critics Circle. The surprise winner from the FFCC was probably Paul Dano as Best Actor for his performance in LOVE & MERCY. Dano consistently turns out great performances, but I’m not even sure he was the lead actor in LOVE & MERCY. Brie Larson took home Best Actress for her great turn in ROOM.
Daisy Ridley won the annual breakout award and while she did a great job in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, history tells us that unless your name is Harrison Ford, Star Wars can end your career just as fast as it starts it. At the end of the day, I’m once again proud to call myself a member of the Florida Film Critics Circle as the winners represent a nice tribute to the great movies of 2015.
