The Green Hornet shines while The Dilemma disappoints at the box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

People were all concerned and Seth Rogen was frustrated with the negative buzz surrounding THE GREEN HORNET and it was refreshing to see someone in Hollywood point out that the people saying the negative things hadn’t even seen the movie.  I can imagine that’s very frustrating, especially for Rogen, who put a lot of effort into this film.  So I’m happy to see that the film did pretty well at the box office and pulled in over $30 million during the three day weekend.  No, it didn’t break any records, but it’s a respectable opening for a film that appeals to a small, niche audience.  The other big movie of the weekend was Ron Howard’s THE DILEMMA, which didn’t fare so well.  I can’t say I’m surprised at the disappointing results after the horrible trailers and TV spots.  The idea was good, Howard just wasn’t the right director for the project.

Next week sees the long overdue release of THE COMPANY MEN and the rom-com NO STRINGS ATTACHED.  Sorry Natalie, I know you’ll probably pick up an Oscar for BLACK SWAN, but there’s no forgiving the poor decision to star in a movie with Ashton Kutcher.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

Seth Rogen and Jay Chou in The Green Hornet

1. The Green Hornet $34m

2. The Dilemma $18m

3. True Grit $11m

4. The King’s Speech $9m

5. Little Fockers $6.9m

6. Black Swan $6.7m

7. Tron: Legacy $5.7m

8. The Fighter $4.9m

9. Season of the Witch $4m

10. Country Strong $3.5m
