The Grey outshines One For The Money at the weekend box office

Liam Neeson in The Grey

It looks like Liam Neeson has once again proven himself a force to be reckoned with when it comes to action movies.  His survival, man against beast film THE GREY opened in first place this weekend with close to $18 million.  I guess there’s a slight chance that the execs at Lionsgate might be disappointed that the Katherine Heigl starring ONE FOR THE MONEY could only manage $11 million on its opening weekend, but personally, I’m surprised it managed anything given how bad it looked.  The other new movie of the weekend, MAN ON A LEDGE came in fifth place.  I guess Sam Worthington isn’t quite the box office draw without the help of 3D.

Next week sees the release of the coming of age, superpower film CHRONICLE, as well as Daniel Radcliffe’s first post-Harry Potter film THE WOMAN IN BLACK.  With a little luck, Liam Neeson might be able to make it two weekends in a row.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1.The Grey $17.6m

2. One For The Money $11m

3. Underworld: Awakening $10.4m

4. Red Tails $9.6m

5. Man on a Ledge $7.2m

6. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close $7m

7. Contraband $6.6m

8. The Descendants $5.7

9. Beauty and the Beast 3D $5m

10. Haywire $3.5m
